[00:00:03] in Kimberley.
[00:00:03] Welcome to the Brunswick Group Therapy Podcast with Lucas and Kimberly.
[00:00:13] Good thing somebody's keeping track.
[00:00:16] So right out of the gate, let's get to it.
[00:00:19] The boy scouts are added again.
[00:00:20] Let me tell you, Blake Nettles thanks to him and probably an Eagle Scout project.
[00:00:26] Yep, Brunswick Hills now has an American flag retirement box.
[00:00:29] Blake is with troop five or 18 just completed his Eagle Scout project by overseeing the entire
[00:00:34] build as the project manager.
[00:00:37] That'll be in the lobby 24-7 and the police station in Kastien, no in the township is at
[00:00:42] the corner of the station and graph man.
[00:00:45] So feel free to stop by there.
[00:00:47] We retired flags in there and they'll be disposed appropriately.
[00:00:50] So well built box.
[00:00:51] Look at the edge lines and you like the graphic.
[00:00:54] Well done Blake.
[00:00:55] Good job.
[00:00:56] The school's back in session.
[00:00:57] First week of school went off without a hitch for the most part.
[00:01:00] Some buses were delayed but they got better as the week progressed as we expected they
[00:01:04] would.
[00:01:04] Thanks to the new routing.
[00:01:07] Everything seems to be doing pretty well.
[00:01:09] There's obviously ongoing construction at the high school so they had to make some changes
[00:01:13] to that.
[00:01:14] Parking is only in the back of the building now and you cannot turn north on to boy or
[00:01:20] drive on school days from 2 to 230.
[00:01:23] It's ex-it only.
[00:01:23] So there's lots of signs indicating that now that allows the bus traffic to exit during
[00:01:28] dismissal time.
[00:01:29] So it's temporarily different.
[00:01:30] It's rules and regulations.
[00:01:32] Yeah, it's hard to get to the library and rec center between 2 and 230 so you have
[00:01:36] to make some adjustments to that but we're going to see schools off to a great start and
[00:01:40] hope for a great year.
[00:01:42] Well, good.
[00:01:43] Well speaking of buses when do I stop for a bus in one don't I?
[00:01:48] I thought Janette said it best where we stop for buses going up a direction on 42 but
[00:01:54] not on 303.
[00:01:56] So three lane roads or less you got to stop for both directions.
[00:02:01] Four lane roads or more the opposite direction traffic does not need to stop.
[00:02:08] That's okay.
[00:02:08] I don't think of it so stop on 42 not on 303.
[00:02:12] All right remember that.
[00:02:13] Got to everybody.
[00:02:14] Yep and here's another thing about school.
[00:02:17] Kids day off you know everybody wants to know what to do with your kid when there's no school.
[00:02:21] So the rec center has put together a thing going on here for October 4th 11 November
[00:02:27] 4th November 5th February 14th March 14th April 21st for kindergarten through fifth grade.
[00:02:34] You can drop your kids off or $40 for members and 55 for nonmembers and there's
[00:02:40] games, got a ball crafts and swimming pizzas included.
[00:02:43] That's at the rec center.
[00:02:44] Nice.
[00:02:45] Something to do when the kids are off school.
[00:02:47] Those are probably teacher in service days and other days like that.
[00:02:52] Right.
[00:02:52] Election day.
[00:02:54] Yaddi, yaddi.
[00:02:55] Mm-hmm.
[00:02:55] And that's good.
[00:02:56] That gives parents a great option.
[00:02:58] Absolutely.
[00:02:59] And if you're not in school yet your kids are still young.
[00:03:03] We headed over to Harmony preschool on pro road here in Brunswick been in business a long
[00:03:07] long time for over 40 years and talked to them a little bit about how to get your child
[00:03:12] ready for school.
[00:03:14] Right.
[00:03:16] All right, everybody.
[00:03:17] We are at Harmony preschool over here on pro road just south of Brunswick Plaza north
[00:03:22] of Laurel Square talking about what they got going on here how long they've been here
[00:03:26] in preschool in general.
[00:03:28] So we are here with Kathy Con, the owner and Megan Wollard three year old teacher.
[00:03:33] First we're going to start off with the history here and how long you guys have been here
[00:03:37] and then we want to talk about some other stuff too.
[00:03:40] So, Kathy, what do you want to talk about today?
[00:03:41] Uh, I am just honored that you came to see us.
[00:03:45] We have been in the community since 1981.
[00:03:49] Um, my mom started it and I started teaching here 18 years ago
[00:03:53] and then seven years ago she retired and I took over his owner
[00:03:58] and we've been growing and thriving and Brunswick ever since.
[00:04:02] Excellent.
[00:04:02] And Megan, what do you do here?
[00:04:04] Again.
[00:04:05] I am the three-year old teacher.
[00:04:07] Got it.
[00:04:07] And how long have you been here?
[00:04:08] Six years.
[00:04:09] Six years.
[00:04:10] That's a long time.
[00:04:10] Put up with three year olds.
[00:04:13] Right?
[00:04:14] So what age groups do you have and what offerings do you have
[00:04:18] and tell us a little bit about preschool?
[00:04:20] It's been a long time since I've sent my kids to preschool
[00:04:22] and I know things have changed.
[00:04:24] I know needs have changed.
[00:04:25] I wanted to tell us a little bit about what you do here.
[00:04:28] So how many preschool is a part-time private preschool?
[00:04:32] We rent space from Holy Trinity Church.
[00:04:35] We are not owned by the church.
[00:04:36] And we serve as students age groups,
[00:04:39] threes, fours and five year olds.
[00:04:42] We are a part-time program so we have a morning session
[00:04:44] from 9 to 11 30 every day
[00:04:47] and then from 1230 to 3 o'clock.
[00:04:50] And we run just like the regular public school system.
[00:04:53] We begin right after Labor Day and end in May.
[00:04:57] So it's a nice schedule.
[00:04:58] We follow the Brunswick City Schools
[00:05:00] and then my teachers and myself get the summer off.
[00:05:03] So nice.
[00:05:03] How many kids do you have right now?
[00:05:05] Right now we have about 130 students.
[00:05:09] So an opening, we do have openings right now.
[00:05:12] We still have openings.
[00:05:14] We have 12 students per teacher in our four and five row classes
[00:05:19] and eight students per teacher in our three row classes.
[00:05:22] So we like to keep our classes pretty small
[00:05:25] but we still do have openings.
[00:05:27] So we will enroll all through the year
[00:05:29] if we have a spot open for students
[00:05:32] and our cutoff date is September 30th.
[00:05:34] So students need to be that age going into school
[00:05:37] by September 30th.
[00:05:38] So if you have a three year old that turns three
[00:05:40] in September before the 30th,
[00:05:42] you can get a minute or three whole class.
[00:05:44] Great.
[00:05:45] One of the things you wanted to touch baseline
[00:05:46] was the importance of preschool program,
[00:05:49] especially with us coming out of COVID
[00:05:51] and the kids missing maybe a year,
[00:05:53] sometimes maybe two years,
[00:05:55] tell us a little bit about what you think
[00:05:58] in your 20 plus years of business here
[00:06:00] that you think is important.
[00:06:02] COVID definitely changed a lot in the preschool world.
[00:06:06] The four was more five motor skills,
[00:06:09] getting students to know their letters, ABCs, right there name,
[00:06:13] but ever since COVID came we've been working very hard
[00:06:16] on social skills.
[00:06:18] We've seen that it's very important
[00:06:20] to get the students out of the house
[00:06:22] and around other students and around other people
[00:06:26] so that they can become confident
[00:06:28] to head into elementary school.
[00:06:30] And at this point I'm gonna turn it over
[00:06:32] to the person that's in the trenches
[00:06:34] with our little students.
[00:06:36] Ms. Megan can tell you a lot about
[00:06:38] what she sees day to day
[00:06:39] and what she does in her classroom
[00:06:42] to get students ready to progress
[00:06:43] from the fours to the fives on the kindergarten.
[00:06:46] I would say our last two years
[00:06:48] have been the ones where we've seen
[00:06:50] the biggest difference in our students.
[00:06:54] Last year, we're our true quote unquote COVID babies.
[00:06:57] The difference is the social emotional part of it.
[00:07:01] It's hard for the students to sit,
[00:07:06] keep their hands to themselves.
[00:07:08] Listen to a three to five minute story a book
[00:07:13] just get in line, keep their hands to themselves.
[00:07:17] Things like that, the simple,
[00:07:20] just simple, socially emotional,
[00:07:22] whereas like Kathy said in the past
[00:07:25] we were focusing on having them trace
[00:07:28] and write their names and cut.
[00:07:30] Now we're taking a couple steps back
[00:07:32] and starting with, can you sit in a circle
[00:07:35] and listen to us go over the calendar
[00:07:37] or read you a story or count to 10.
[00:07:41] So we're really having to dial it back
[00:07:42] and focus on that for the good first half of our year
[00:07:45] before we can get into the fine motor part of it.
[00:07:49] So it's important I feel now to start preschool at three
[00:07:54] and getting the two years in of preschool.
[00:07:58] So that the three year old classes
[00:07:59] can focus more on the socially emotional part of it
[00:08:02] and then you'll move up to the four year old class
[00:08:05] and then start your academics to prepare
[00:08:09] for kindergarten the following year.
[00:08:12] So I think one of the probably most not popular questions,
[00:08:15] but one of the questions is how do I know
[00:08:18] when my child is ready to move on?
[00:08:20] And you said you've got some older kids, the five's,
[00:08:23] that maybe didn't make the cut off or they just might need
[00:08:26] one more year, just of school before they go
[00:08:30] to the public schools.
[00:08:32] So what are some things the parents can look for
[00:08:34] or I know every child's different.
[00:08:37] Yeah, so you're gonna say to me right?
[00:08:39] But is there anything that they can maybe look for
[00:08:42] or any way that they can be evaluated?
[00:08:44] The child can be evaluated or anything like that?
[00:08:47] Here at Harmony we do do conferences for parents
[00:08:50] so parents get a nice portfolio in the spring
[00:08:54] that lets them know what skills their student has mastered.
[00:08:57] We all our moms ourselves,
[00:09:00] so we can all tell you we've never had a parent come back to us
[00:09:04] and say oh I'm so upset that I send them to school
[00:09:07] early, most of our summer birthdays end up staying
[00:09:10] with us for that extra year and it's a gift
[00:09:13] because they get that extra year to mature
[00:09:15] or they become more confident.
[00:09:17] So that's why I think we like our five-year-old program
[00:09:20] too, it helps them to bridge that gap
[00:09:23] when they're kind of stuck in that cutoff date of August 1st.
[00:09:26] The other thing is you could talk to your pediatrician.
[00:09:29] I always say go with your gut instinct.
[00:09:31] Students have to be potty trained to be at Harmony
[00:09:33] so a good thing is when you think your students
[00:09:36] ready to be potty trained just kind of take them out
[00:09:38] in public places during COVID,
[00:09:40] people weren't going to the grocery store.
[00:09:43] So it's all fun and games to go potty at home
[00:09:46] with your mom and dad, but when you have to leave the house,
[00:09:48] that was a challenge.
[00:09:50] So see how they act in public,
[00:09:52] can they use a public restroom?
[00:09:55] Can they talk about their phone number or their address
[00:09:58] when they're a little bit older?
[00:10:00] Just basic things that you can work on at home
[00:10:02] and if you see that they're starting
[00:10:03] to become curious about school and more social
[00:10:07] just kind of bridge that gap
[00:10:09] and get them into preschool.
[00:10:11] Well and I think that's why you guys mentioned,
[00:10:13] you know, get a couple of years of preschool
[00:10:15] and not just one and then done
[00:10:18] because that'll lay that foundation
[00:10:19] for them to be confident and to know a little bit more
[00:10:23] about everything as far as school goes
[00:10:26] and prepare them a little bit better for.
[00:10:28] The difference being a three year old teacher
[00:10:30] and seeing a student come from the three-year old class
[00:10:34] and then come back and go into the four-year old class
[00:10:37] is huge.
[00:10:38] The confidence that they gain even just throughout the year
[00:10:42] I think it's the biggest growth that we see
[00:10:45] and then to see them come back after the summer
[00:10:48] and they're a completely different student
[00:10:51] once they come in as a four-year old.
[00:10:53] You're like, oh my gosh, why weren't you
[00:10:55] with a student like that in the threes?
[00:10:57] But the confidence, the smiles,
[00:11:00] just the behavior, everything is different
[00:11:02] and that's all because they came to three-year old preschool
[00:11:06] and we went through the hard part with them
[00:11:08] and we taught them that
[00:11:10] and I feel like we're responsible
[00:11:11] for taking that little person
[00:11:13] and growing them into a bigger little person
[00:11:16] but now that can sit and actually learn
[00:11:19] and prepare for kindergarten.
[00:11:21] And then advantage probably lasts
[00:11:23] part of the way through elementary school as well
[00:11:25] with the social abilities.
[00:11:27] Yeah, I mean that's the foundation.
[00:11:29] Really, they're schooling and getting into that.
[00:11:32] So great things happening here.
[00:11:34] It sounds like we try.
[00:11:35] We try to stay involved with the school system too.
[00:11:39] We have a lot of parents that are teachers
[00:11:42] in the school system.
[00:11:44] So we like to think we do more than just with the state standards
[00:11:47] or we constantly are talking to teachers
[00:11:50] that are out there in the public schools,
[00:11:53] finding out what they want students to know
[00:11:55] and then breaking that down
[00:11:57] and making sure we cover that
[00:11:58] so that the students are more than ready to go.
[00:12:01] Walk into their first day in kindergarten.
[00:12:03] Yeah, I mean, and I know we see a community events all the time.
[00:12:06] They're always a trunker treat every year
[00:12:08] for a ticker rich and doing other things around town.
[00:12:11] So if anyone's interested in getting a hold of you,
[00:12:14] how do they get a hold of you?
[00:12:15] So you can give us a call at 330-273-3535
[00:12:20] or you can check out our Facebook page.
[00:12:23] We are on Twitter also and we have a website.
[00:12:26] Our website is HarmonyPreeSchoolLTD.org.
[00:12:31] And our Instagram is HarmonyPreeSchoolOHO
[00:12:34] and our ex formerly known as Twitter is also HarmonyPreeSchoolOHO.
[00:12:41] So if you can't figure out how to get hold of these girls,
[00:12:44] what the hell are you talking about?
[00:12:46] I know what it's like to do in our broad road.
[00:12:48] What kind of a, thank you guys for talking with us today.
[00:12:52] Thank you.
[00:12:52] For the information and I'm glad we don't have pre-schoolers anymore, right?
[00:12:57] Yeah.
[00:12:57] Hi, I'm so excited.
[00:12:59] I'm so excited.
[00:12:59] I'm so excited.
[00:13:00] But I'm, yeah.
[00:13:01] But beautiful facility here.
[00:13:03] You guys have been looking at some of the pictures.
[00:13:05] And again, thank you for hanging out with us today.
[00:13:09] Thank you.
[00:13:10] Thank you.
[00:13:11] So that was a great interview.
[00:13:13] You know, you don't even think about how COVID might have affected
[00:13:17] small, small children infants as they grew up during COVID.
[00:13:21] Yeah, I mean, that's what Megan said.
[00:13:23] She called them the COVID babies and there in school now
[00:13:26] and getting them ready maybe a little bit different.
[00:13:29] Just a little bit different.
[00:13:30] So if you're looking for a preschool check out Harmony,
[00:13:32] get any questions, skip, Kathy or Megan call.
[00:13:35] Oh, I'm moving right along.
[00:13:37] Gingerbread House contest.
[00:13:38] Is that time already?
[00:13:40] It's so like good.
[00:13:41] Where are we talking about this right now?
[00:13:44] I think there's only 10 more weeks to Christmas.
[00:13:47] Stop it.
[00:13:48] That's 10 Friday.
[00:13:50] Medina County Historical Society.
[00:13:53] Well, once again, be having a gingerbread house contest
[00:13:56] and trees will be on display at the John Smart House Museum.
[00:14:00] That's on Elmwood in Medina, Sunday, November 3rd.
[00:14:04] There's all the dates.
[00:14:05] I'm not even going to read all those.
[00:14:06] But anyway, this is a People's Choice Award.
[00:14:09] Adults are 16 and up, children 15 and under.
[00:14:11] New this year is our professional category.
[00:14:14] Wow.
[00:14:15] I see some architects and bakers in the future.
[00:14:18] For their information, they're to receive an application,
[00:14:21] contact the Mediana County Historical Society at 3307221342
[00:14:27] or email them.
[00:14:28] That's pretty neat.
[00:14:29] Maybe we should do something like that.
[00:14:30] That's what I was just thinking.
[00:14:31] Maybe we could have bronzer president
[00:14:33] to a gingerbread house and either have a place to play it
[00:14:37] or put it online for everybody to vote.
[00:14:40] Come up with the prize.
[00:14:41] Maybe they could go in between the Christmas trees
[00:14:43] over at 33017.
[00:14:44] So we might have to think about this.
[00:14:46] Yeah, my wife does one every year for work.
[00:14:48] So you're probably just double duty it for her.
[00:14:51] I'm sure a lot of people do.
[00:14:53] Right.
[00:14:53] Okay.
[00:14:54] All right.
[00:14:54] We'll look into that.
[00:14:55] We'll let you know.
[00:14:56] Well, you might come up with something there.
[00:14:58] Yeah.
[00:14:58] What else we got?
[00:14:59] I thought this was exciting.
[00:15:00] Monarch carpet one floor in home has a remodel.
[00:15:05] I saw the sign up.
[00:15:05] Angle he construction was doing a remodel form.
[00:15:08] But Dart Brothers was out there doing landscaping.
[00:15:11] Just touching up that building
[00:15:12] and making a commitment to stay in the community
[00:15:14] for years to come.
[00:15:16] Yeah, that's great.
[00:15:17] I actually stopped by there to pick up a donation
[00:15:21] that they made for stuff to bust
[00:15:22] and the guys were hanging out in the warehouse out back.
[00:15:26] That's where the show was.
[00:15:28] So now that it's all done, I'm sure they're back up front
[00:15:31] and loving their remodel and glad they're back in the game.
[00:15:35] And you know, they're going to have culvers right next door
[00:15:37] pretty soon.
[00:15:38] So they need to be ready for some traffic.
[00:15:40] It looks like probably.
[00:15:42] So don't forget to support local.
[00:15:43] They have carpet flooring tile and more.
[00:15:46] So when you're out there getting a quote, make sure you at least get one
[00:15:48] from them to keep it competitive.
[00:15:52] Yeah, absolutely.
[00:15:54] We want to give a shout out to Huntington Visual Arts Program
[00:15:57] for Winning First Play, a semester of show at Medani County Fair.

[00:16:03] by answering questions, show you casing their artwork
[00:16:06] and explaining their process
[00:16:08] and how their masterpieces came to be.
[00:16:11] So special shout out to students,
