[00:00:00] Welcome to the Brunswick Group Therapy Podcast with Lucas and Kimberly. Alrighty! And we're off. Episode number 59. I hope everybody had a nice 4th of July. Still a couple events to talk about going on this weekend. Let's talk about 101 years.

[00:00:27] Our community's oldest World War II veteran and all-around great guy has made another trip around the sun. This is from Brunswick, Ohio Police. They're honored to once again help him celebrate his upcoming birthday July 21st.

[00:00:40] Mr. Taylor will be turning 101 years old, so they want to make it a big bash.

[00:00:46] So Mission Barbecue is hosting his birthday on the 21st from 1 to 3 and whether permitting they'll be on the patio so they can just drive by and honk if you don't, you know, can't stay or come on in and grab a bite to eat.

[00:00:57] Also, they were asking for cards, envelopes, postcards, any kind of birthday wishes that you want to send. Send it to the police department in care of Officer Mumbert and Mr. Taylor. Again, that's going to be Sunday the 21st. That's fantastic. Happy birthday, Mr. Taylor. Mr. Taylor, congrats.

[00:01:16] Also in Brunswick Police News, three officers were awarded the Life Saving Award last week. So on June 17th, about 10 a.m., they received a call of an 80-year-old male who was not breathing.

[00:01:28] The caller performed CPR but on arrival, Sergeant Mike Mathis, Officer Greg Kelman and Officer Jeff Valick arrived on scene and began life saving measures and used the defibrillator. They're combined efforts, who was later transferred to Brunswick Rescue Squad. This is Officer Kelman's second Life Saving Award.

[00:01:49] So congratulations to all three of them. That's amazing. Knowing that officers are trained in that when ambulances can't get there as quickly, that's a fantastic thing. So congratulations and thank you for your service to the community.

[00:02:04] So on a really strange note, we had the Pickle Eating Contest at sidelines last week. What was the fastest time? Was 1 minute and 42 seconds, I believe? Yeah, I don't know. I think I could crush that. I think I could crush that.

[00:02:21] I wasn't there and those pickles do look pretty big but I don't know if they gave it their all. Well, they said it was 8 1o 1o inches long or something like that. They're pretty big. They're pretty big.

[00:02:31] But there is a men's contest coming up so you just might have to put... Yeah, we just might have to enter you and you might have to man up to that one. Sure. So watch sidelines Facebook page for that. They'll be posting information about that soon.

[00:02:45] What do you got? More serious news. The Ohio Senate passed a bill that blocks the controversial interchange between Strongsville and Brunswick. So now the House has to vote on their similar bill and then Governor DeWine has to sign

[00:03:01] off on it and then there will not be a mandated interchange at Boston Road. But that doesn't stop the interchange. It just means that NOACA will have to do what they always do, do a study to see

[00:03:15] which one of these roads may possibly help traffic situations at 82 and 303. So instead of... What is it like the fifth study in 40 years or something? I mean, come on people. Yeah, yeah, I don't know.

[00:03:32] But at least one guy isn't telling everybody that this is where the road is going. It's being left up to the professionals in the studies. Yeah, that's true. Good point. One step closer to that. Great. Well, speaking of roads, we've had our share of road closures this week.

[00:03:48] Not only two water main breaks, but extended closure for Marks Road is going to go through the 14th, Sunday the 14th of July. So hopefully that'll be done in who knows when 303 will be fixed. I went to Rapid Wrench and Bloob for some brake pads.

[00:04:06] And of course, I forgot Marks was closed and had to turn around and go back all around. I mean, the figs all have been closed for what four months? Well, and I thought they were supposed to start on substation too and close that down. I thought I saw.

[00:04:20] Yeah. And I think there's a 303 one, not the two water main breaks that we had earlier this week. I think there's a lane closure or something in the coming weeks. Aren't we supposed to be flying by now in cars? You know, the Jethlins or whatever? Not quite there.

[00:04:34] Not quite there. What else we got? There are stairs at Neura Park that a woman fell down. I went down these stairs, not face first, but they are getting a little rough. So make sure that's included in the Parks and Recs comprehensive plan.

[00:04:49] Those probably should be addressed if not done so already. Right. You may have noticed that Kimball has taken over trash pickup for Republic waste. There's no changes to the types of service. For the most part, it went off without a hitch. They did pretty well.

[00:05:04] A couple people said that they was later than normal. A couple people said that their certain recyclables weren't taken and there was a note on them. Some people did say that their service didn't come at all, but contact information for Kimball is available.

[00:05:17] And if you have any issues at all, give them a call. Should be the same service. Straight to it, right? A couple of business changes going on. First of all, we were kind of, well, I know we were sad to see no-nose happy kitchen has been

[00:05:31] stable for a couple years now. And they have decided that they have to close permanently. They've just had some challenges and just think that it's in the best decision of the business to go ahead and close.

[00:05:44] We're always already hearing rumors that it may reopen friends or something like that, or somebody affiliated may reopen Puerto Rican food. But we wish them well on their next endeavor and hope everyone's healthy. I know they've had some health challenges.

[00:05:57] And then also would be remiss if we didn't mention that Amir over at Brunswick-Grabbingo has sold his business and that is due to his wife was transferred to Atlanta. So the family has to move down that way. And so got new owners coming in.

[00:06:16] And I guess I just wanted to mention it because every once in a while you get a business person that gets it. And Amir has gotten it from day one. He's embraced the community and he's embraced local businesses and he's done everything that he could

[00:06:29] to be a part of the community and to help support other local businesses. So Amir, you will be deeply missed. And thank you so much for showing people how it's done and always be in a smiling face when people go in there.

[00:06:42] And we're going to miss you, bud. Yeah, a lot of good things from him. Hey, somebody reached out to us and said El Taco Loco has some activity again inside. So maybe something will be happening there too. Oh, why don't you go knock on the door? Walk in.

[00:06:54] See if the door's open. That's what you do. That's your job. I can't keep them always doing that. Here's another business. This was exciting. This one's just temporary but the Rico's Farm Fresh Veggie Stand is back open.

[00:07:07] Looks like they're closed Monday but they got corn, tomatoes, squash, green beans, onions, lettuce and other stuff. Yeah, a little bit of everything. I stopped the other day and he even had like small bananas. I got some of those and my husband said the corn was pretty good.

[00:07:24] Yeah, I did see somebody saying the corn was pretty good. Yeah, yeah. So my favorite time of year. I love to see the roadside stands. Oh, this was a lot of fun. Yeah, it was. Nothing like watching somebody on your camera is going to steal from you.

[00:07:38] Yeah, look at this guy just strolling to Ohio Pie, going to a back storage room, grab some handfuls of shirts and then try and walk out. He looks like he's pretty familiar with the place.

[00:07:50] He knew exactly where he was going when he walked in and luckily on his way out. Maybe he was cold. Maybe he was cold and he needed something. He didn't have any shoes on so I would have started somewhere else.

[00:08:01] He already had shirts on but the guy was just wearing socks. You need to carry shoes. You need to carry shoes, Nick. Come on. Get some shoes. Luckily. Oh my gosh. And then she's like, wait a minute. What is he doing with all that stuff?

[00:08:14] Hang on a minute. I'm the merch guy. I'm the merch guy. So and we also need to, Nick if you're listening, I hope you are. Lucas and I would like some living large wear so if you could get with us that would be great but we'll see.

[00:08:32] Brunswick Youth Sports is having their tryouts soon. Those tryouts are scheduled for July 17th through the 20th.

[00:08:40] So if you have a child who'd like to be in Brunswick Youth Sports, you can check out this chart here to determine when and where you will go for the seasonal tryouts. Very nice. I don't want to talk about this one. You talk about it. No? All right.

[00:08:56] More money? They want more money? Well it looks like there's another reappraisal. So I guess there's a partial reappra- a partial appraisal and then a couple years later there's another reappraisal.

[00:09:07] So we reached out to the Medina County Auditor's Office, Anthony Capretta and here is a video clip explaining what's going on that they sent to us. Hello. I'm Anthony Capretta, your Medina County Auditor.

[00:09:22] Last week I posted a short video about representatives from my office taking photos of properties in Medina County. There are roughly 85,000 parcels in Medina County that need to be individually reviewed for the 2025 reappraisal. What Medina County had in 2022 was an update.

[00:09:45] An update is an overall market trend based on current sales. Under state law and Department of Taxation rules, real property in all counties is reappraised every six years and property values are updated in the third year following each sex annual reappraisal.

[00:10:06] The schedule of reappraisals is made by the Ohio Department of Taxation and can be viewed on their website. Stay tuned as I will be hosting a roundtable discussion with other community leaders.

[00:10:19] We will be talking about the 2025 reappraisal process and what it means for the taxpayers of Medina County. In the meantime, please email us at reappraisal25atohmedinaco.org and continue to follow us on Facebook.

[00:10:38] On behalf of myself and my staff, I would like to wish you a happy 4th of July. Thank you. Well there's that so we'll see how that turns out. Yeah hopefully not too painful on the wallet but we thank them for getting back to us.

[00:10:55] That's great, you know. We love to get those facts right? Yeah. So speaking of facts, speaking of digging, ha! Get it? Brunswick is going to be asking for bids for some work in the parks including dredging project over at North Park so...

[00:11:14] Right. Some people in the post didn't understand why they drained the lake and then now they're asking businesses or going after bids for the dredging. But because this is being paid for through grant money to maintain safe water ways, I guess the best way to put it is,

[00:11:31] they have to follow certain steps. First they do this, then they do this, then they do this and you know it has to be within a certain scope of work in a certain order. You know otherwise we pay for it. I don't want to pay for it. Right.

[00:11:43] I'm glad we're able to get some grants. I had some questions so I reached out. So how deep will it be afterwards? I asked they said about 10 feet on average.

[00:11:52] I don't know if anybody has seen the pictures but currently it only looked like it was about 2 feet in certain areas. They're going to remove 17,000 cubic yards of sediment from the lake and it will be moved to a city owned parcel on North Carpenter.

[00:12:07] I asked if they could add it to the sledding hill for future use so maybe we could have a sit on sack slide or something like that. And they said they couldn't because due to environmental restrictions including the presence of wetlands, they couldn't do that. No, yeah. Restrictions.

[00:12:24] Yeah, EPA restrictions. So I don't know why they can put it over by North Carpenter and not here but...

[00:12:30] And I don't know if anybody knows where the mannequins live but the property just to the south, the one with where it used to be two wooden barns, now one is owned by the city. So I would imagine that's the property that they're talking about.

[00:12:42] 17,000 cubic yards, that's a lot. Did you see not to change the subject but to change the subject? Somebody posted. Can somebody please go cut the grass? I can't see the mannequins. Yeah, right? They're hiding in the weeds. Hiding in the weeds. Oh my gosh, that was cute.

[00:13:00] That was really cute. So anyway, moving right along we have July food distribution. Here's a list. Take a look. If you are in need, those... When the next ones are coming up, Medina, Wadsworth, there's always something available locally, low too.

[00:13:16] So just check with Feeding Medina County, their Facebook page if you are in need of assistance and or don't forget our... We have several pantries here in the city so feel free to reach out to them if you're in need of assistance.

[00:13:29] And then I posted this, even though I'm not a fan, I will support them. Although I did see something on here that I think I want to try. Medina Pudding sounds good. That sounds good. Yeah, well...

[00:13:40] Rosatis, if you're wondering what I was talking about, sorry, let me backtrack. Rosatis, frozen custard, here's their schedule for special flavors for July. So pineapple upside down cake. Yeah, there's some good ones there. Tomorrow is pineapple coconut, sounds good.

[00:14:00] Yeah, you know, if it's a sea salt caramel I may have to try. That one's coming up next weekend so... But anyway, I'm still not a fan, I still want my honey hut but I'm a fat chick so I like ice cream.

[00:14:12] So here we go, I'll probably be there. And then speaking of food, some of the best food around is at the Red Onion and here's their calendar for the month of July with a lot of stuff they have going on.

[00:14:24] Psychic readings, they are closed for the fourth, closed Labor Day weekend, but don't forget Cornhole tournaments on Tuesdays, Boozy Bingo coming up, that's always a sellout. So check out their daily specials, Clam Bakes coming up. Do you know we're one of the only areas to have clam bakes?

[00:14:40] It's like not a big deal in other regions. No, I didn't know that. Yeah, kind of like sweetest day in October, like not everybody does that. And then... Anyway. And you know I love calendars so here's the Wooden Nickel calendar. All their specials?

[00:14:55] Yeah, they have Survey Says trivia on Wednesdays, they have Quizzard trivia on Tuesdays, they have obviously a Wing Special on Monday, some Smash Burger specials on Tuesdays, more Wing Specials Wednesday and other good stuff, Patty Melt on Saturday.

[00:15:11] And this month featuring, Long of Fries, that sounds amazing right there. And then here's another calendar, Hoppy Dudes. They have Music Bingo on Wednesday, Cornhole Games on Thursday, a Happy Hour on Fridays and then Live Bands each Saturday starting at 6pm. I love the early bands.

[00:15:30] Right, lots of stuff going on. Let's take a quick break, come back with some events coming up this weekend and beyond. Sounds good. What can you expect from the You Know You're From Brunswick If Facebook group? You know, it's your typical social media community group.

[00:15:49] People rave about the places and products they love. People leave restaurant reviews and seek out landscape or recommendations. People rant about other people. I'm not gonna lie, it can be a hot flip and mess sometimes. But other times you're scrolling through in whatever.

[00:16:01] Boom, you find some random heart tugging post where you see the good inside Brunswick Ohio residents. You see a community supporting and coming together to help someone in need and you get proud of living in this community.

[00:16:11] Then you scroll some more and you find something so ridiculous it's time to log off the internet for the day. But you know, either way, you're coming back tomorrow for more. Okay, no puppies this week. This long one, what do we got?

[00:16:26] Oh my gosh, we've got tonight 8 o'clock family outdoor movie night at the Brunswick Rec Center. Independence Day, kind of appropriate, right? 8 o'clock ringing lawn chairs, blankets, all that comfy stuff right at the Rec Center. Free event and check it out tonight 8 o'clock.

[00:16:43] Yeah, and tomorrow at 1 p.m. Saturday the 6th is Rick Smith Jr. doing magic right there outside on the outdoor stage. Weather pending, they'll have hot dogs while supplies last beginning at 12.30. Who doesn't love a good magic show? Yeah, he looks familiar.

[00:16:59] Like I think he's been through this way before, or local guy or something like that. But we'd have to check that out. So going back to the Wooden Nickel, they've got Bingo Knight is back. And that's if you can get there with all the road closures. Just kidding.

[00:17:14] 965 Marks Road, leave early. Bingo will be Monday night, 6.45. And this is one of two bingo nights that will help raise money for a local family. A young girl, Sammy was in a life-changing accident. Her family is still uncertain how the outcome will be.

[00:17:33] She's faced with a collapsed lung, fractured pelvis, multiple facial fractures. And her family is experiencing something no parent should ever experience. So this bingo event will help them fundraise for medical expenses and other things. And again that is Monday the 8th at 6.45 p.m.

[00:17:50] So hopefully you can attend, enjoy some bingo and help raise money for that local family. Fun on the Farm is Back at Spring Mist Farms. Just about every Wednesday I think throughout the summer. But Wednesday, July 10th from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

[00:18:06] So you can go early, go later. Petting Farm includes horses, ponies, donkeys, mule, goats, kids. I don't think that means like children. I think that's baby goats. Yeah, I think so. She lambs llamas of pack. Oh my gosh, I'm not going to read all these.

[00:18:28] But anyway there's a whole lot of animals. Cash only admission is $5, rides are $2 and feed is $1. So support our local. This is a third generation working farm. And the farm does assist in educational and recreational needs for your children.

[00:18:46] Be at your school or just visiting them on a Wednesday. So make sure you stop by there this summer, put it on your bucket list. Things to do. And with that, let's roll over to Touch A Truck. Touch A Truck.

[00:19:00] I haven't seen one of these in a while. Yeah, at Hinckley Preparatory Academy on Center Road in Hinckley. That is Saturday, July 13th at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They're going to have a variety of big trucks and vehicles, food trucks, a petting zoo and school tours.

[00:19:18] So if your kid likes to touch trucks or you like checking them out yourself, you can go to Hinckley Preparatory Academy. Why can I not say that word? No wonder people call it Hinckley Prep Academy. That sounds a lot easier. There you go, much easier. Get there.

[00:19:34] Much easier. Grace and Gratitude Yoga has posted their July schedule. So if you're interested, please check out their Facebook page. They've got some things coming up like a sound bath on the 14th and floating frequencies with Kaylee on the 28th and then classes all month long.

[00:19:55] So those are just a couple of the special ones. So check them out. That's Grace and Gratitude Yoga. Yeah, they've got a lot of different things for all levels. They're very spread out in their offerings. So get on them. And then saving the best for last,

[00:20:14] what I think everybody's going to have a lot of fun with Christmas in July. Yeah, I mean, I'm hoping. I hope everybody gets out there and visits. It's going to be a lot like the Easter Egg Hunt. So we've got details right here. Stop in.

[00:20:27] We'll give you a hint day or two ahead of time where the Grinch will be. And your job is to go visit the Grinch, go visit the business and take a picture and then come back. And just like the Easter Egg Hunt,

[00:20:37] post that, give the business a shout out and you'll be entered. And we'll be doing weekly prize packages, weekly prize packages. So everything from gift cards to a bottle of rum to a full interior auto detailing to axe throwing, package auto zone is even getting involved on this.

[00:20:55] There's just going to be something for everybody. So make sure you listen. So make sure you listen to the podcast, which you should be listening anyway, right? Every Friday. But we are announcing the winners on the podcast. So that's the only way you're going to find out

[00:21:10] is to listen to the podcast. That's right. And this helps support local businesses. We get, this gets people into the businesses that they may not normally visit to see what they have to offer and it gets the businesses involved in the community. And thanks to local artists,

[00:21:24] Carrie Sparenga for providing the Grinch and the tree and the other, what do we call them? Boards that will be moving around town for you to find and enter. So good luck to everybody and have fun. I think that's going to do it for us. That's it.

[00:21:38] I pursued 59 in the books. All right. You guys have a good one. And we'll see you next time. Take care. Bye. Thank you for joining us for another therapy session. A reminder that the views, thoughts and opinions expressed on this program
